A must if you live in the US tornado alley
If you live in the tornado alley in the United States just buy this, don't even think about it too much. If you have the budget pair it with a ER310 so you can leave that in your basement and this WR120 in your main floor.I disabled all default alerts and let only the ones that I couldn't disable plus the severe thunderstorm warning activated, so I know that when this thing goes off I must get the kids, my wife, the dog and go to the basement immediately. Check online videos on how to set that up, it's not that hard. This product would be perfect if it had a volume control (like the WR300). The alarm is really loud, so if you put this in your bedroom you better not have any heart condition! I also plugged a red led light (also bought here on Amazon) into this radio to make it more dramatic when the alarm goes off, but you can plug a pillow shaker/vibrator instead if you want.Stay safe. Also make sure you have an emergency kit in you basement (e.g. drinking water, batteries, flash lights, blankets, etc).

Not the most intuitive thing on the market
I purchased the clamshell version, which is supposed to be the EZ setup. It's not that the setup is hard, but you really do have to follow the directions step by step. The buttons don't seem very intuitive, with a fair amount of scrolling through menus using up and down arrows. It was also cumbersome to find the local broadcast and get tuned to it. It feels like technology from the '80s, but it does get you where you're going. We've already found ourselves in the path of a tornado and this radio gave us plenty of notice. It works great once it is set up.There are two different sound components on this radio. First, there's the alarm. It is quite loud and can be heard in every room of the house. Immediately following the alarm, there is an announcement with very specific information about the warning delivered by an automated voice that sounds like it's on lithium. Even at its maximum volume, this announcement is very faint. It can only be heard in the room that has the radio in it. This means every time the alarm goes off, you actually have to drop what you're doing and sprint through the house just to get close to the radio. Invariably, the first part of the message is missed. I also have dogs with severe thunder anxiety so they usually know even before the radio goes off that something ugly is coming our way. They've now associated the radio alarm with that anxiety and also me tearing out of the room just so I can hear the recorded message. Now whenever the alarm goes off, the dogs go batcrap crazy and fling themselves in front of me when I'm trying to get to the room with the radio, effectively turning my basic sprint into a sprint/hurdle event complete with a lot of wailing by everyone involved. We wouldn't have that problem at all if there was an option to crank up the volume so you don't have to be sitting on top of the radio just to hear the announcement.

Good, but could be slightly better. (Will add photo later)
This is a good radio, but there is 1 really bad thing about it. It is not bad enough to remove a star though. The thing is, this is a really good radio. It has SAME functionality, which means you can choose to opt-out of alerts for the whole listening area, and only get alerts for your area. I have found over the 3 years I have owned this product, it has shut off after detecting the three EOM headers. My other, older weather radios that I have struggle with this. But, there is one feature my older radios have, but this one does not. This radio does not have the ability to lower or raise the volume of the ALERT tone. This means the tone will either be too loud, or too quiet (probably the first). This may be a good thing for some of you, who want the loudest alarm possible. If the ALERT being too loud is a problem for you, try the WR300 or WR400 as these have adjustable ALERT volume. Other than this, I have enjoyed this radio for the past 3 years.Another very cool feature is to not have to worry about SAME codes. You just go to your menu, select "SET LOCATION" and click "SINGLE". You then select your state and scroll down until you find your county. When you find your county, select it. Then, your programming should be saved when you exit.

I got this for my husband and we are really happy with it for our trailer camping etc
Works really well, I got this for my husband and we are really happy with it for our trailer camping etc. The warning is quite loud when it goes off so be forewarned. If it goes off in the middle of the night you can't miss it!
